The Chronic Pain Crisis in Australia
Chronic pain is a silent epidemic affecting millions of Australians, with far-reaching consequences for individuals, families, and the economy. By 2050, an estimated 5.23 million Australians will be living with chronic pain, representing a staggering one in five adults. This debilitating condition not only impacts quality of life but also poses a significant economic burden, with annual costs projected to reach $215.6 billion by 2050.
The ripple effects of chronic pain extend beyond personal suffering, affecting workforce productivity and retirement patterns. With 68.3% of those living with chronic pain being of working age, and 40% of early retirements in Australia attributed to chronic pain, the societal impact is profound and multifaceted.

APSRA: A Unified Approach to Pain Management
The Australian Pain Solutions Research Alliance (APSRA) was established in July 2021 in collaboration with the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Our mission is to unite consumers, researchers, health professionals, industry, and government to propel the discovery and delivery of effective pain solutions. APSRA aligns with Goal 6 of the National Strategic Action Plan for Pain Management, focusing on creating consumer-driven solutions and defining clear research priorities.
Our collaborative approach involves comprehensive environmental scans, literature reviews of national and international alliance models, and engaging key stakeholders through workshops and roundtable discussions. This inclusive strategy ensures that all voices are heard and considered in our quest to revolutionise pain management in Australia.
Consumers
Individuals living with chronic pain, providing invaluable insights and driving research priorities.
Researchers
Leading experts in pain management, neuroscience, and related fields, dedicated to finding innovative solutions.
Health Professionals
Multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and psychologists, implementing best practices in pain management.
Research Priorities and Innovative Solutions
APSRA is committed to advancing research that addresses the growing burden of pain on Australians and the economy. Our research priorities are shaped by consumer needs and focus on developing practical, effective solutions for chronic pain management. We emphasise multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, particularly in primary care settings, to ensure comprehensive pain management strategies.
A key focus area is the development of non-opioid alternatives for chronic pain patients. This research aims to provide safer, more effective treatment options and reduce the risks associated with long-term opioid use. By fostering collaboration between different research disciplines, we aim to accelerate the discovery of novel pain management techniques and therapies.

1

4

Technology Integration
Leveraging digital health solutions and artificial intelligence to enhance pain management and patient care.
Overcoming Challenges in Pain Management
APSRA recognises several key challenges in the current landscape of pain management in Australia. One significant issue is the lack of consistent understanding among health professionals regarding non-pharmacological pain treatments. This knowledge gap can lead to suboptimal care and missed opportunities for effective pain management.
Another challenge is the disconnection between health and research sectors, which can hinder the translation of scientific discoveries into practical clinical applications. To address these challenges, APSRA is working to bridge these gaps through educational initiatives, interdisciplinary collaborations, and the development of clear, evidence-based guidelines for pain management.
Lack of Understanding of Non-Pharmacological Treatments
Many health professionals are not fully aware of the range and effectiveness of non-pharmacological pain treatments. This can lead to an over-reliance on medication-based approaches. APSRA is developing comprehensive education programs to address this knowledge gap.
Disconnection Between Health and Research Sectors
There is often a lag between research findings and their implementation in clinical practice. APSRA is creating platforms for regular communication and collaboration between researchers and healthcare providers to accelerate the adoption of new pain management strategies.
Need for Clear National Pain Research Priorities
Without clearly defined national priorities, research efforts can be fragmented and less effective. APSRA is working with stakeholders across the country to establish a unified set of research priorities that align with the needs of pain sufferers and the healthcare system.
Collaborative Approach: Uniting for a Pain-Free Future
APSRA's strength lies in its collaborative approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders to tackle the complex issue of chronic pain. Our alliance model is based on extensive research of national and international best practices, ensuring we adopt the most effective strategies for the Australian context. Through regular workshops and roundtable discussions, we facilitate open dialogue and idea sharing among consumers, researchers, health professionals, industry representatives, and government officials.
This collaborative framework allows us to leverage the unique insights and expertise of each group, creating a synergistic environment where innovative solutions can flourish. By uniting these diverse perspectives, APSRA is fostering a more holistic and effective approach to pain management research and implementation.
